Diarrhoea prevalence, characteristics and outcome among children admitted into the emergency ward of a tertiary hospital in Southern Nigeria

Diarrhoea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly developing nations. The majority cases can be successfully managed at home, but few may necessitate admission to the emergency ward. purpose this research determine prevalence, characteristics, outcome, associated factors among those admitted. After obtaining consent, all children who presented with diarrhoea within year were recruited for study. A semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used collect biodata, treatment, outcome information from caregivers. Statistical Package Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 analyze data. total 164 5,087 seen admitted diarrhoea, resulting 3.2% prevalence. higher proportion participants males, aged 0-24 months, not exclusively breastfed. third had previous year, having 1-2 episodes. case fatality rate 2.4%. prevalence diarrhoeal admissions low, as rate. Stool frequency, hydration status, socioeconomic class significant predictors fatal outcomes. Recurrent episodes significantly maternal education attendance day care centers.
